The Dutch Safety Board is required by law to investigate very serious incidents involving Dutch seagoing vessels or seagoing vessels in Dutch waters. Furthermore, the Dutch Safety Board can also investigate occurrences on inland waterways. The Board only does this if there are broad safety lessons to be learned.
Very serious incidents are events in which
- someone dies or suffers very serious injuries
- a ship is considered a total loss or
- serious environmental pollution occurs.
