Rail and road traffic
In some cases, the Dutch Safety Board is required by law to investigate railway accidents. The Dutch Safety Board can conduct investigations on road traffic in the event of serious or persistent problems with road safety. The Board only does this if there are broad safety lessons to be learned.
Railway traffic safety involves the safety of
- passengers and railway workers
- level crossings
- infrastructure and equipment and
- safety systems
The Dutch Safety Board can also investigate external safety of railway traffic. This includes risks to local residents in the event of accidents involving hazardous substances or serious derailments.
