The DigiNotar incident

The investigation of the Dutch Safety Board into the ‘Diginotar incident’ has focused on the way the government safeguards the safety of the digital communication with its citizens. The main subjects investigated are the administrative and organizational processes with which the governments shape digital safety. The Dutch citizens must be able to trust that the government does everything in its ability to ensure the safety of digital communication of citizens with the government. The reliability of the (PKI) certificates, that play a vital role in the security of digital data exchange between governments, was compromised because of the hacking of the computer systems of Diginotar.
