Fire at the detention centre Schiphol-Oost.

On the night of 26 October 2005 and in the early morning of 27 October 2005, eleven people lost their lives in a major fire at the Detention Centre Schiphol-Oost. The guards were no longer able to free these people from their cells. However, they did succeed in opening 21 of the 26 cells thus rescuing 32 occupants from their cells. A total of fifteen people suffered injury, including guards and cell occupants, and a wing of the building was destroyed.
