Fatal accident with pilot tender
On 30 March 2023, the Dutch pilot tender Lacerta wanted to put a pilot on board the seagoing vessel Wilson Monsoon. When coming alongside, a crew member of the pilot tender became trapped between the pilot boat and the seagoing vessel.
Safer transfer of pilots with stricter work instructions
The transfer of pilots to and from seagoing vessels should not be based on trust in each other's good intentions. The pilotage system must draw up equal and clear work instructions for the sailing service and for registered pilots. In doing so, they should make use of practical experience, risk analyses and best practices. All crew members on board the pilot tenders and the pilots must regularly discuss and practice these work instructions with each other. This is the lesson for the Dutch Safety Board formulated by the Dutch Safety Board after a fatal accident with the pilot tender Lacerta on the North Sea near the harbour of IJmuiden on March 30th 2023.
