The reason for starting the investigation is that incidents involving migrant workers occur regularly. Despite several initiatives in recent years to better protect migrant workers, they still face unsafe conditions – more often than other workers. Often, migrant workers in the Netherlands are unable to fend for themselves, as they lack language proficiency, knowledge of Dutch regulations and a social network. This makes migrant workers largely dependent on others for their safety.

Dutch Safety Board chairperson Chris van Dam: “Migrant workers in the Netherlands are regularly exposed to situations of risk at work. This includes accidents. We will investigate where the safety of migrant workers is lacking and how it can be improved.”

The Safety Board calls on migrant workers who have recently had an accident at work, or others who have information about an accident involving a migrant worker, to inform the Safety Board by emailing onderzoekarbeidsmigranten@onderzoeksraad.nl.
