What makes organizations that conduct research in the public interest worthy of trust? What do citizens, politicians and administrators expect from effective and relevant research/investigative bodies? Which qualities contributes to trust and what does that entail? The Dutch Safety Board studied these and other questions extensively for the publication ‘Trustworthy Research in the Public Interest’. On 22 May 2024 this study was presented to representatives from the political-administrative world, investigative/research organizations and society.

Research in times of fake news and distrust

Chris van Dam, Chairperson of the Board: ‘Trust is crucial for investigative bodies, especially in times of insecurities, fake news and societal distrust. Trust increases the chances of effectiveness and follow-up. No one benefits from an investigation that ends up at the bottom of a drawer.’

Series of explorations by the Board

With this study, the Board aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the trustworthiness of research/investigation in the public interest. Previously the Board published explorations into societal effectiveness (2019) and independence in relation to research in the public interest (2018).
