Precautionary landing after smoke in cockpit, Cessna Aircraft Company 172P, PH-SEL, Sommelsdijk

After a training flight of approximately 45 minutes, the descent was initiated to 2000 feet. Just before the aircraft reached this altitude, the red low voltage light came on. Then, the screens of the radios and transponder failed. Some smoke came out of the centre console where these instruments are located and the reading on the oil temperature gauge was high. The instructor then decided to make a precautionary landing.
Inspection by a maintenance company revealed that there was an alternator failure, causing excessive voltage in the on-board system. As a result, several systems failed.
