Cockpit canopy opened during winch launch, Alexander Schleicher Ka 6 E, PH-401, Twente Airport

Status : Closed

The pilot had to wait for an approaching aircraft. Because of the heat, he opened the canopy. When the pilot then closed the canopy again, he probably did not lock it properly. During the subsequent winch launch, the pilot made a yawing movement at an altitude of about 150 metres to indicate to the winch driver that he was being winched up too fast. During this movement, the cockpit canopy suddenly opened. To prevent the canopy from opening further, he held it with his left hand. The pilot flew a shortened circuit, performed a side-slip on final approach to increase the rate of descent and landed next to the winch. After landing, he released the cockpit canopy so that he could operate the airbrake lever with his left hand to brake.
