Embraer waits for regulation on technical solutions
- General
The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is not yet developing independent systems as part of the aircraft to prevent an aircraft from taking off late through the use of erroneous take-off data.
Embraer first wants to wait for new European regulation. The manufacturer is thus missing out on an important opportunity to contribute to aviation safety. This is the result of following up a recommendation that followed an investigation by the Dutch Safety Board into a near miss in September 2021.
Hard barriers are important
The Dutch Safety Board emphasizes the importance of these systems, making it impossible to take off with erroneous data. Other aircraft manufacturers as Airbus and Boeing have already started developing these kind of systems.
Do not wait any longer
Embraer indicates that it has made improvements in the application that pilots use to calculate take off data. It would be going too far to develop new systems at this stage. With this, the manufacturer wants to wait until new European aviation rules are introduced, so that they do not have to adjust these systems when new rules are introduced. The Dutch Safety Board believes that it cannot be waited, because the recommended systems are important for passenger safety.
The incident in short
At Berlin Brandenburg Airport in September 2021 a commercial aircraft took off only just before the end of the runway. Incorrect data entry resulted in thrust setting too low at takeoff. At the moment of take off, only 443 meters were left to the end of the runway. Hence the safety margins were not met.
